  • Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! 🎉 At Berwick, we're incredibly fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who step up to organize and assist with special interest programs and enrich our communities. Meet Doreen Sharratt, one of our remarkable residents at Berwick Qualicum Beach. With her expertise in Bridge, Doreen took the initiative to establish and lead our Bridge Club, generously sharing her time to teach this intricate game. Thanks to her guidance, even residents who had never played before have become excellent players! Doreen's contributions extend further as she played a key role in organizing both in-house Bridge tournaments and friendly competitions against Parksville. Thank you, Doreen, for your invaluable dedication! Join us in honouring a volunteer this week by tagging someone below who deserves recognition! 🎉

“Ultimately, my main goal is to keep our residents healthy, happy, active, and as independent as possible for as long as possible. Our job is to fuel their minds, bodies, and hearts through engaging and meaningful activities, events, and programs.” - Pat Palmer, our active living manager at Berwick by the Sea. Keeping a calendar full of engaging activities for a large and diverse group is no small feat. Thanks to team members like Pat, Berwick residents find new activities and programs to choose from every month, along with long-standing favourites such as bingo, blackjack, creative writing, and a book club. In February, programming included Paint and Sip, a shuffleboard competition, special Chinese New Year-themed events, and a clothing swap. • Congrats to Berwick Qualicum Beach residents Maggie, Tess, and Ewan for completing their play, "Murder They Wrote"! Led by coach Denene Derksen, the drama group faced challenges finding a short play suitable for Readers Theatre, a format with minimal movement tailored for aging minds and bodies. Yet, with teamwork, they crafted a unique murder mystery, addressing the need for more women characters and balanced parts. Maggie Sheehan kick-started the group with a unique concept, followed by Ewan Cotterill and Tess Cormack adding depth to the script. Pens and ideas were flying with this passionate, creative four-person team, and “Murder They Wrote” came to life. "We kept each other sharp, and I’m really pleased with the result," Denene shared. "This was the best collaborative writing experience I’ve ever had, and I’m so looking forward to seeing it brought to life this spring." Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes rehearsal and performance dates! 🎭

  • While being at full capacity is fantastic news for Berwick by the Sea, and certainly a testament to the sense of community residents enjoy, it also means those hoping to join the Berwick family will likely be waiting six to twelve months for a suite. Loren Butler, Community Relations Manager at Berwick by the Sea in Campbell River, emphasizes the importance of planning ahead before transitioning to a retirement community, even if moving is a few years away. “We’re currently working off a waitlist, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t steps that individuals and couples can take to ensure they’re ready when space becomes available,” she says. In honour of Earth Month, we're celebrating sustainable eating at Berwick Communities throughout April by featuring well-known BC-based chef, sustainable seafood advocate, and culinary talent Ned Bell at our sites. Ned uses his voice and platform to stand up for the world’s lakes, oceans, and rivers. He supports hyper-local farming sustainability as the co-owner of Hatch Hospitality, and is a brand ambassador for Buy BC, Ocean Wise, Planetary Health, and Sustainability at the Chefs Table Society. We cannot wait to share photos from our upcoming visit with Ned and the culinary pop-up he is hosting for our communities. Stay tuned!

Meet Berwick's founders! Like in any successful business, great leadership sets the tone for the entire company.
